fyro macedonia
lake ohrid
The Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia. Why? Both Bulgaria and Greece claim nationship of the land that is now FYRO Macedonia. The area of northern Greece that borders the country claims the name for itself. The isssue still has been resolved and so for now it'll stick. I'll just call it Macedonia from now on though. Lake Ohrid is the tourist destination for Macedonians. The ride to the border from Tirana in Albania wound high above valleys along a green forested mountian spine. Below were small villages and farms, a patchwork quilt of fields. The turquoise blue ake was gorgeous, an old medieval town sits on a small hill on its southern side.

Lake Ohrid
Walking across the border from Albania to Ohrid.
An marsh area of the lake near the Sveti Naum Monastery.
Old and crumbling homes in the medieval Old Town.
Lake Ohrid, the largest, oldest and deepest lake of the Balkan countries.
A cobblesone street.
The main street, very touristy, lined with shops, cafes and bars and filled with mostly young Macedonian tourists and students on holidays.
One of the many medieval curches in the Old Town above the lake.
A gnarled, 900-year old plane tree supported by a large iron structure that fills its centre near the town plaze.
A little homeless kitten I found wandering the streets.
Macedonia's 'sun-flag' with the flag of the EU proudly displayed in a park near the water's edge.
